Special Exhibit – The Great Anthracite Coal Strike of 1902.

The strike took place during a period of American History in which progressive-minded reformers sought social reform and improvement for the laboring masses.  Defense Attorney Clarence Darrow summarized the democratic and progressive goals of the labor union which he represented, “We are working for democracy, for humanity, for the future, for the day will come too late for us to see it or know it or receive its benefits, but which will come, and will remember our struggles, our triumphs, our defeats, and the words which we spake.”

The strike settlement was only a partial victory for the mineworkers as the coal operators and railroad presidents did not recognize the United Mine Workers of America Union.
