Kitchen of a typical mine worker’s house, c. 1935

Whether in a “company” house or a private residence, the kitchen was the focal point of family activity.  It served as both a place to prepare and serve meals, as well as a multi-use area where such tasks as sewing, laundry, bathing, and childcare were accomplished.  The room was a hub of activity and filled with the smells of traditional foods like sauerkraut, pasta, sausage and corned beef with cabbage.  Given the ample coal-fired stove, it was also the warmest space in the home and offered a comfortable refuge during cold winter days.
