The piece will be illuminated by the visual projections of scenic designer Jeff Sugg. Tickets are $10 and are available online and at the door.\r\n\r\nWolfe also will offer a pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m. in the Kirby Center.\r\n\r\nA portion of the proceeds from the concert will benefit the Anthracite Heritage Museum. Contact the Museum at 570-963-4804 for information.\r\n\r\n“Anthracite Fields\,” which received the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Music\, includes both the dark echoes of the underground caves and the moments of light in the lives of the miners who persevered and endured. The oratorio’s text draws on oral histories\, speeches\, geographic descriptions\, local rhymes\, and a coal advertisement. Wolfe also conducted personal interviews\, including with a third-generation miner and the daughter and granddaughter of miners\, and journeyed into both an active and a closed mine. To hear portions of the oratorio and to hear Wolfe discuss her composition of the piece\, visit www.bangonacan.org.\r\n\r\nThe recording of “Anthracite Fields” was released last month on Cantaloupe Music\, providing music lovers with the first opportunity to experience the piece since it won the Pulitzer Prize last spring. Mark Swed of the Los Angeles Times said of the premiere at the N.Y. Philharmonic Biennial that it “captures not only the sadness of hard lives lost…but also of the sweetness and passion of a way of daily life now also lost. The music compels without overstatement. This is a major\, profound work.” Second Inversion described the piece as “intense\, evocative and completely original.”\r\n\r\n“Anthracite Fields” was commissioned by the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia through Meet the Composer’s Commissioning Music/USA program\, made possible by generous support from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust\, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation\, and the Helen F. Whitaker Fund. DESCRIPTION:News for Immediate Release\r\n\r\nFebruary 17\, 2016\r\n\r\nAnthracite Heritage Museum will feature films\, guided tours and free admission on Pennsylvania Charter Day on Sunday\, March 13th!\r\n\r\n Scranton — The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum will host a film program by F. Charles Petrillo of Wilkes-Barre on Sunday\, March 13\, 2016\, as part of Pennsylvania Charter Day.   The film program will begin at 2 p.m. with a series of silent and sound films of anthracite mining beginning with the Lehigh Coal Company’s “Wonders of Anthracite” produced in 1928. Volunteers of the museum will also provide guided tours starting at noon.  Charter Day is traditionally a day when Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites open admission-free in commemoration of the document by which King Charles II granted to William Penn the vast tract of land known today as Pennsylvania.  The day will include fun and interesting activities for children and families such as the Pennsylvania Trail of History game hosted by students of the Leadership Lackawanna Program Tomorrow’s Leaders Today and the opportunity to participate in creating artwork.  Refreshments will be served and visitors are invited to enjoy a Pennsylvania “Birthday” cake!\r\n\r\nThis program is supported\, in part\, by a Lackawanna County Arts and Culture grant\, a program of Lackawanna County Commissioners Patrick O’Malley\, Jerry Notarianni and Laureen A. DESCRIPTION:Scranton—On Thursday\,  July 28 at 5:30 p.m.\, the Patio at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel will light up as we “Stoke the Fire” and gear up for the annual Bonfire at the Iron Furnaces. Join us for an evening on the veranda with music\, hors d’oeuvres\, beer and sangria. A $20 ticket covers food\, select beverages\, and entertainment from 5:30-8:00. All proceeds support the 2016 Bonfire at the Iron Furnaces\, an event sponsored by the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Associates. This non-profit\, community-based organization supports the Scranton Iron Furnaces\, located at 159 Cedar Avenue\, as well as the Anthracite Heritage Museum in McDade Park. Both sites strive to educate the public about the Lackawanna Iron & Coal Company and its impact upon local and national industrial history.\r\n\r\nThe Scranton Iron Furnaces is a four-acre historic site operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in partnership with the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Associates. An important part of both northeast Pennsylvania and U.S. industrial history\, the site helped fuel the industrial revolution through the production of rails for the nation’s railroads. By the 1880s\, the furnaces ranked as the second-largest iron producer in the U.S. Today\, the four massive furnace stone stacks\, built between 1848 and 1857\, recall the titan the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. DESCRIPTION:Scranton — On Saturday\, May 13\, 2017\, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum will host Anthracite Heritage Conference 2017. The presentations at this exciting conference are a continuation of interest in the Anthracite Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  The conference presenters will discuss various areas of research now being undertaken and the possibilities for further regional studies.  Together these presentations provide examples of the range of resource materials and illustrate the value of an interdisciplinary approach to the region’s history.  Finally\, as with all historical studies\, they raise new questions and create opportunities for additional research and writing. \n  \nThe conference fee is $25 per person and includes morning and afternoon refreshments\, as well as lunch. DESCRIPTION:Come to the Anthracite Heritage Museum to hear all about Allan Jones\, the Old Forge-born Welsh singer who made it big on the silver\nscreen. Admission is five dollars and the event will feature a lecture by Dulais Rhys\, a noted Welsh music educator and journalist. \nJones was born on October 14\, 1907 in Old Forge\, PA to a Welsh father and an English mother. In 1936\, Allan Jones debuted on the silver screen\nafter winning the lead role of Gaylord Ravenal in the film Show Boat. He went on to fill other lead roles and minor roles in the well-known films A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. He continued to work on stage and in movies till his death in 1992.

DESCRIPTION:The Anthracite Heritage Museum in McDade Park will commemorate the powerful story of the Knox Mine Disaster on Saturday\, January 20\, 2018\, at 2 p.m.\, marking 59 years since January 22\, 1959\, when the ice-laden waters of the Susquehanna River broke into the Knox Mine at Port Griffith\, Luzerne County\, Pennsylvania sweeping away twelve men. \nVideo by Erika Funke from 1984 and David Brocca\, 2018\, will be featured. The program will also include anthracite-related music by Jay Smar. \nA large needlework designed and embroidered by Audrey Baloga Calvey\, as a tribute to her father\, victim John Baloga\, and the other men lost that day\, will be exhibited. \nRefreshments will be served following the program. \nThe Knox disaster program is free of charge to the public. SUMMARY:C. Smith: African-American Business and Community Leader Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:  \nAnthracite Heritage Museum Celebrates African-American History Month \nScranton—The Anthracite Heritage Museum in McDade Park will celebrate African-American History month with a lobby case exhibit entitled: Granville C. Smith: African-American Business and Community Leader. Granville C. Smith came to City of Scranton in 1940 to operate the G.W. Brown Company\, Inc.\, a contract hauler to the Great Atlantic and Pacific (A&P) Tea Company. Consequently\, the city gained a wise businessman\, a tireless community leader\, and a compassionate friend.  During his thirty-four years in the city he served in numerous capacities: He was owner-operator of G.W. Brown\, a member of the Kiwanis Club\, and board member of the Scranton Public Library.  Other board memberships included Goodwill Industries\, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council on Alcoholism\, the Tri-County Migrant Ministry\, the Central City Neighborhood Center\, and the Boys Club of Scranton.  Equally inspiring was Smith’s active role in promoting human and civil rights among the people of Scranton.  He served as a member of the Advisory Committee for the State of Pennsylvania of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights\, Chairman of the Committee on Human Relations\, and as a member of the Commission on Religion and Race of the Presbyterian Synod of Pennsylvania.  In 1971\, he was honored for his work by the United Nations Association.  Two years later\, Smith moved to Teaneck\, New Jersey\, with his wife Dorothy.  That town also benefited greatly from Granville’s dedication to community service until his death in 2002. \nThe exhibit is open free of charge to the public and will be in place from Thursday\, February 1st through Wednesday\, February 28\, 2018.  Admission is charged for the Museum’s main exhibit\, Anthracite People: Immigration & Ethnicity in Pennsylvania’s Hard Coal Region\, and other temporary exhibitions. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) will celebrate the commonwealth’s 337th birthday on Charter Day\, Sunday\, March 11\, with free admission to many of the historic sites and museums along the Pennsylvania Trails of History. \nFor this significant anniversary in Pennsylvania history\, the Anthracite Heritage Museum will feature free admission to the museum\, family activities\, and a lecture titled Silk That Spanned the World: The Silk Industry in Eastern Pennsylvania 1880-1990 by Martha Capwell Fox\, curator/archivist with the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor\, will speak at 2 pm.  The museum opens at noon. \nSilk That Spanned the World: The Silk Industry in Eastern Pennsylvania 1880-1990 \nIn 1913\, the United States became the world’s leading producer of silk goods. The same year\, Pennsylvania surpassed New Jersey—essentially\, Paterson\, New Jersey—as the leading American silk manufacturer.  Every county in the Commonwealth had at least one silk mill\, though the industry was concentrated east of the Susquehanna River\, particularly in Lehigh\, Northampton\, and Berks counties. By the mid-1920s\, the value of Allentown’s silk production—over $53.5 million—was larger than that of any Pennsylvania county. The Depression\, competition from Southern and foreign textiles\, as well as the advent of synthetics\, all combined to shrink the local industry steadily but it persisted in Pennsylvania until the second half of the 20th century.  The talk will include a short video that was shot in the last silk mill in the Lehigh Valley. \nMartha Capwell Fox has been the Historian and Archives Coordinator for the National Canal Museum/Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor since 2012. She was the assistant to the NCM Collections Manager from 2003-2005\, and guest curator of the NCM exhibit “Behind the Seams: The Silk Industry in Eastern Pennsylvania.”  Martha presented three papers at Canal History and Technology Symposia\, on the silk industry in the D&L Corridor\, a biographical sketch of 19th century entrepreneur Jose de Navarro\, and an industrial history of Catasauqua\, Pennsylvania\, the site of the first commercially successful anthracite iron furnace. She was a Pennsylvania Commonwealth Speaker from 2004 to 2006. Also a professional writer and editor\, Martha worked in magazine publishing at National Geographic and Rodale\, Inc. and has published four books on local historical topics and three young adult histories on swimming\, auto racing\, and the Vatican. Her most recent book\, Geology\, Geography\, and Human Genius: the Industrial History of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor\, will be released later this year. She is a graduate of American University with a dual degree in international relations and U.S. history.

The presentation will be geared towards abandoned mines\, mine reclamation\, mine water pollution\, environmental advocacy of long-term community groups within the coalfields\, and survey results of groups from across PA that continue to work on legacy abandoned mine issues that make them sustainable. Lessons learned and advice from long-standing community groups from across PA that have worked in the anthracite and bituminous coalfield communities will be highlighted. An explanation of the Surface Mining Reclamation Control Act\, the RECLAIM Act\, Environmental Good Samaritan Act\, and brief highlights of regional EPCAMR Programs\, Environmental Education Watershed Tours\, water quality monitoring\, aquatic connectivity surveys\, and technical services that we’re providing to the Commonwealth of PA and the public at large will be discussed as well including our underground mine mapping project\, state-wide conferences on abandoned mine reclamation\, and 3D underground mine pool modeling.
