SUMMARY:C. Smith: African-American Business and Community Leader Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:  \nAnthracite Heritage Museum Celebrates African-American History Month \nScranton—The Anthracite Heritage Museum in McDade Park will celebrate African-American History month with a lobby case exhibit entitled: Granville C. Smith: African-American Business and Community Leader. Granville C. Smith came to City of Scranton in 1940 to operate the G.W. Brown Company\, Inc.\, a contract hauler to the Great Atlantic and Pacific (A&P) Tea Company. Consequently\, the city gained a wise businessman\, a tireless community leader\, and a compassionate friend.  During his thirty-four years in the city he served in numerous capacities: He was owner-operator of G.W. Brown\, a member of the Kiwanis Club\, and board member of the Scranton Public Library.  Other board memberships included Goodwill Industries\, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council on Alcoholism\, the Tri-County Migrant Ministry\, the Central City Neighborhood Center\, and the Boys Club of Scranton.  Equally inspiring was Smith’s active role in promoting human and civil rights among the people of Scranton.  He served as a member of the Advisory Committee for the State of Pennsylvania of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights\, Chairman of the Committee on Human Relations\, and as a member of the Commission on Religion and Race of the Presbyterian Synod of Pennsylvania.  In 1971\, he was honored for his work by the United Nations Association.  Two years later\, Smith moved to Teaneck\, New Jersey\, with his wife Dorothy.  That town also benefited greatly from Granville’s dedication to community service until his death in 2002. \nThe exhibit is open free of charge to the public and will be in place from Thursday\, February 1st through Wednesday\, February 28\, 2018.  Admission is charged for the Museum’s main exhibit\, Anthracite People: Immigration & Ethnicity in Pennsylvania’s Hard Coal Region\, and other temporary exhibitions. \n

SUMMARY:Charter Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) will celebrate the commonwealth’s 337th birthday on Charter Day\, Sunday\, March 11\, with free admission to many of the historic sites and museums along the Pennsylvania Trails of History. \nFor this significant anniversary in Pennsylvania history\, the Anthracite Heritage Museum will feature free admission to the museum\, family activities\, and a lecture titled Silk That Spanned the World: The Silk Industry in Eastern Pennsylvania 1880-1990 by Martha Capwell Fox\, curator/archivist with the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor\, will speak at 2 pm.  The museum opens at noon. \nSilk That Spanned the World: The Silk Industry in Eastern Pennsylvania 1880-1990 \nIn 1913\, the United States became the world’s leading producer of silk goods. The same year\, Pennsylvania surpassed New Jersey—essentially\, Paterson\, New Jersey—as the leading American silk manufacturer.  Every county in the Commonwealth had at least one silk mill\, though the industry was concentrated east of the Susquehanna River\, particularly in Lehigh\, Northampton\, and Berks counties. By the mid-1920s\, the value of Allentown’s silk production—over $53.5 million—was larger than that of any Pennsylvania county. The Depression\, competition from Southern and foreign textiles\, as well as the advent of synthetics\, all combined to shrink the local industry steadily but it persisted in Pennsylvania until the second half of the 20th century.  The talk will include a short video that was shot in the last silk mill in the Lehigh Valley. \nMartha Capwell Fox has been the Historian and Archives Coordinator for the National Canal Museum/Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor since 2012. She was the assistant to the NCM Collections Manager from 2003-2005\, and guest curator of the NCM exhibit “Behind the Seams: The Silk Industry in Eastern Pennsylvania.”  Martha presented three papers at Canal History and Technology Symposia\, on the silk industry in the D&L Corridor\, a biographical sketch of 19th century entrepreneur Jose de Navarro\, and an industrial history of Catasauqua\, Pennsylvania\, the site of the first commercially successful anthracite iron furnace. She was a Pennsylvania Commonwealth Speaker from 2004 to 2006. Also a professional writer and editor\, Martha worked in magazine publishing at National Geographic and Rodale\, Inc. and has published four books on local historical topics and three young adult histories on swimming\, auto racing\, and the Vatican. Her most recent book\, Geology\, Geography\, and Human Genius: the Industrial History of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor\, will be released later this year. She is a graduate of American University with a dual degree in international relations and U.S. history.

SUMMARY:Mining Life and Culture in the Anthracite Region
DESCRIPTION: “There is no business on earth subject to as many casualties.”  Mining life and culture in the Anthracite Region\nA lecture by Harold Aurand\, Jr. \nThe anthracite coal industry was full of contradictions.  Mining had many of the attributes of high status jobs.  Before a miner could take charge of a workplace he had to be licensed by the state.  He was given autonomy in setting the pace of his work\, and how he would go about doing it.  Promotion to low level supervisory positions required practical experience working in the mines.  The way he was paid suggested miners were viewed by mine owners as respected\, independent producers of coal\, not just wage employees.  Despite all this\, miners’ pay remained low\, and many struggled to escape poverty.  It was little better for the mine owners.  Although anthracite powered the industrial revolution and heated the homes of many eastern cities\, the actual digging of coal usually brought little profit.  This talk will focus on what exactly happened here.  Why anthracite mining always seemed to be a better career and investment than it was\, and how the unique patterns of work and industry gave rise to a distinct local culture.

SUMMARY:WYSO - An American Visionary Artist
DESCRIPTION:WYSO – An American Visionary Artist: Frank “WYSO®” Wysochansky -1915-1994\nA lecture by Steve Lichak\nBetween post-WW II until his death on September 14\, 1994\, Frank Wysochansky the anthracite outsider artist\, “WYSO®” produced over 5\,000 works of art and thousands of cartoons. Working furiously\, using pen\, ink\, watercolor\, Crayola crayon and sculptural forms. He spread melted crayons across canvases and carved out images. Creating figural sculptures from Bondo\, an inexpensive automotive body repair product that he worked around armatures such as chicken bones\, light bulbs\, bags of sand and wire coat hangers. WYSO® was one of twelve children born to Ukrainian immigrants. His father\, Joseph\, was a coal miner who lost his life in a mining accident. It was WYSO’s intimate knowledge of miners and their families that was to influence his art throughout his life. WYSO® represents a common man with uncommon talents and vision\, an American treasure\, who portrays events through the eyes of immigrants forging a new life during challenging times\, yet ever embracing their faith and love of God and their ancestral heritage.

SUMMARY:Charity Cask for a Cause - Firkin Friday at Cooper's Seafood in Scranton
DESCRIPTION:Join us the last Friday of May for Cooper’s Charity Cask Night as we tap a firkin\, raise a glass\, and some much needed money\, (100% of the sales) for the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces!\nCome join us for a fun Happy Hour & help out The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum & Scranton Iron Furnaces. The firkin will be tapped promptly at 5 pm. We’ll have raffle items & a 50/50 so grab some family and friends & meet us @ Cooper’s to have some beers all while supporting The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum & Scranton Iron Furnaces!!! \nWHAT is a firkin ale?\nA firkin is a small keg\, holds about 10 gallons or so of cask-conditioned\, 50°F beer. We source our firkins from breweries in our backyard to breweries across the country! The cask is always a special\, one-of-a-kind beer connoisseur’s treat. It is available only until it runs dry\, which could be just hours (or less) after it’s tapped. \nWHY a firkin ale?\nIf you love beer then this is your chance to experience drinking a real ale! Open up your senses to the hop and malt flavors released by drinking a beer from a hand-drawn firkin served at a respectable temperature. \nAt 5:00 p.m. the last Friday of every month a tap is hand-driven into the firkin with a mallet.  A small hole is opened at the top and the beer flows!!! Try this tasty treat — real ale as it was meant to be!

SUMMARY:Cerddoriaeth & Ceol: Welsh and Irish Anthracite Music Traditions
DESCRIPTION:March 27\, 2021.  Zoom webinar\, 2 pm. EDT.  Cost:  $5/computer screen.  Tickets:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cerddoriaeth-ceol-welsh-and-irish-anthracite-music-traditions-tickets-142741845703 \nEach March\, we celebrate our Celtic roots in Pennsylvania with the Welsh St. David’s Day on March 1st and the Irish St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th.  The Anthracite Region is home to some of the largest populations of Welsh and Irish in the United States who have had a profound impact our local culture. Immigrating here to work in the growing coal industry in the 19th century\, the new residents brought many customs including their music.  Join us for a special program on these unique treasures with special guest scholars from Ireland and Wales. \nDr.  Bill Jones\, Emeritus Professor of Welsh History will present\, Môr o Gân [A Sea of Song]: Welsh choral and communal singing in the Anthracite Region in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, the Anthracite Region contained the largest concentration of Welsh people in America. The immigrants brought with them from Wales their native language and many social\, cultural\, industrial\, musical and religious traditions that flourished in\, and influenced the communities in which they settled. This presentation explores one of the most widely known and enduring of those traditions. Singing\, a key element of Welsh ethnic identity\, made an inestimable impact on the region’s musical scene. It pervaded the social and cultural activities of the Welsh and their ethnic institutions\, the churches\, the eisteddfod (literary and musical competitive festival) and\, later\, the Cymanfa Ganu (hymn singing festival). ‘Môr o Gân’ is how contemporaries frequently described Welsh ethnic life\, because of the scale\, vibrancy and quality of its choral and communal singing. It is a tradition that is still evident today. \nDr.  Deirdre Ní Chonghaile will present The Rev. Daniel J. Murphy Archive: Irish Sean-Nós Singers in 19th century Pennsylvania.  This presentation shares the story of Rev. Daniel J. Murphy from Sligo and J.J. Lyons from Galway\, who transcribed over 1\,200 sean-nós songs from Irish-speakers in Philadelphia and the anthracite region of Northeastern Pennsylvania from 1884 to the 1920s. With each song transcription event capturing a unique moment of encounter and art\, the Rev. Murphy Archive demonstrates forcibly but eloquently the conviction with which the Irish diaspora treasured\, performed\, and celebrated their home-country heritage in their new homes in America. Preserving the pre-Famine memory of Ireland in a diasporic setting\, this extraordinary collection of manuscripts represents a monument to Irish heritage\, to American heritage\, and to the diasporic experience. It also reveals a unique opportunity to map song through time and space and so highlight its currency\, mobility\, and enduring power. \nBill Jones is Emeritus Professor of Welsh History at Cardiff University\, Wales\, where he taught modern Welsh history in Welsh and English. His main research interest is the history of the Welsh overseas in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He has published extensively on the Welsh in the United States\, including Wales in America: Scranton and the Welsh 1860-1920 and Welsh Reflections: Y Drych and America\, 1851-2001. He has delivered presentations in the United States many times during the past forty years\, the most recent being in 2019\, at the North American Festival of Wales in Milwaukee and the 150th Anniversary Commemoration of the Avondale Mine Disaster. \n Deirdre Ní Chonghaile A musician\, broadcaster\, writer and curator from the Aran Islands\, Deirdre Ní Chonghaile (MA Oxon\, PhD) is the co-ordinator of the on-going community-based project Amhráin Árann – Aran Songs. She was previously NUI Postdoctoral Fellow in Irish/Celtic Studies and Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at NUI Galway\, Alan Lomax Fellow at the Library of Congress and NEH Keough Fellow at the University of Notre Dame. Her research interests include the untold story of the cultural lives of Irish-speaking immigrants in nineteenth- and twentieth-century North America; and the potential of digital humanities to enable creative access to the rich archive of Irish music and folkloric material that survives on both sides of the Atlantic. As a consultant\, she has served Harvard University\, the Library of Congress\, English National Opera\, Druid Theatre Company\, and the Irish-American Climate Project among others. \nThe Anthracite Heritage Museum is a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum site dedicated to the study\, promotion\, and collection of material culture\, traditions\, and stories of the people who created built\, lived in\, and sustained an industry and community in Northeast Pennsylvania.  The Anthracite Heritage Museum is currently closed due to COVID.  Please check our website and Facebook pages for details about our reopening. www.anthracitemuseum.org\, www.facebook.com/anthraciteheritagemuseum. \nThis project was supported by a Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Community grant a program of Lackawanna County Commissioners Jerry Notarianni\, Debi Domenick\, Esq. and Chris Chermak. \n
