DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The Anthracite Heritage Museum showcases the story of Pennsylvania’s hard coal and related industries, the historic immigrant culture of northeastern Pennsylvania, and the evolution of the region’s culture. As an intern, you will work closely with museum staff to implement curatorial activities related to collections and exhibits. Work involves:
- Participating in artifact cataloging
- Researching and drafting responses to basic research inquiries
- Assisting curators with Anthracite Heritage Museum inventory
- Conducting basic research and installing small museum exhibits
- Assisting curators with Argus public facing entries
- Assisting with public tours and other education duties as needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- 10 week internship, May 2026 through August 2026, approximately 225 to 300 hours
- Work hours are flexible and will be finalized between selected interns and their supervisor.

Part-Time Business Manager
ACCOUNTABILITY: The Board of Directors of the Associates
SUPERVISION: The Site Administrator is the immediate supervisor of the Business Manager
SUMMARY: The Business Manager of the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Associates is an integral part of the financial operations of this non-profit organization. As the Museum Store manager and staff liaison to the Board of Directors, candidates for this position must possess skills and experience not only in financial management and bookkeeping, but should also have an interest in historic interpretation, educational programming, and community engagement. The Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Associates is a support organization to the Anthracite Heritage Museum/Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission that operates under agreement to carry out museum support and program functions.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Business Manager will:
- Carry out the fiscal, business, legal and tax responsibilities of a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation with the assistance of the Board Treasurer and Board of Directors. This includes preparing mandated associates reports, documents and material for audits.
- Assist the Associates in complying with its mission as defined by the terms of the Agreement between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Associates (see below).
- Assist the Associates in attaining the goals of the Annual Program and Budget and support fundraising and program/event development.
- Work closely with Commonwealth staff and Associate board members.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Oversee the operation of a museum store with two part-time personnel. Duties include purchasing, planning, sales, merchandise handling, inventory, personnel, marketing and operations.
- Maintain an active volunteer recruitment program.
- Perform payroll functions for all Associates personnel.
- Coordinate the membership program with assistance of the Board; including managing dues collection, new member recruitment, production and distribution of newsletters, membership programming and recognition, and related activities appropriate to a membership organization.
- Work with Museum staff in implementation of an enhanced community and public relations program, assist with school tour program management, give tours as needed.
- Help coordinate fundraising activities including fee-based programs, sponsorships, donation solicitations, and other revenue-generating activities.
- Oversee the Workman’s Compensation Insurance and Comprehensive General Liability policies of the Associates.
- Perform bookkeeping functions of all Associates accounts including but not limited to two checking accounts and one money market account.
- Keep up with new techniques in office automation to better manage membership campaigns, store inventory and program timetables.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent formal education background or experience)
- Minimum of two years management experience with knowledge of general principles of management.
- Minimum of two years of retail experience including purchasing, promoting, selling, and customer engagement.
- Must enjoy working with people and serving the public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Fundraising experience
- Bookkeeping experience
- Program management experience
- Salary based on previous experience.
